Batxellí is my family’s surname, a Catalan name from the eastern Pyrenees. I’ve traced it back through parish and civil records, mostly from the Diocesan Archive of Girona and FamilySearch. The spelling has drifted over the centuries: Batxallí around 1600, Batxellí by 1700, then Batxelli and Batchelli in the 1800s.

The research lives at batxelli.cat, in Catalan and English. Each branch of the family has a page with a family tree you can download as a GEDCOM file, and a map shows where the surname is found.

Records can be wrong, so I’m also using Y-DNA, which passes from father to son along with the surname. My test came back as haplogroup R-PF6155, and my earliest known ancestor on that line is Narcís Batxallí. The site asks other men with the surname to take a test so the lines can be compared.
